Children’s Day

On this April 30, as in any every year, we celebrate Children’s Day… or at least we should.

When we were little, the best thing about this day was asking our parents for presents, and not having school chores. But now that we are older, maybe we don’t even remember if it was an actual holiday to skip school or being celebrated while we were there.

So why should we celebrate now?

Perhaps the majority of us have heard it said that children represent the best of human beings. Until they learn it from society, children tend not to have prejudices or hold grudges when someone offends them. They accept everyone and forgive everything.

For some, this type of innocence and naivety might seem inept for the real world, but that’s exactly why we would all do well to be a bit more “childish.”

If we look at our surroundings, many of the problems in the world are caused precisely by prejudices (against immigrants or those who abide by other religions or political beliefs); or by grudges that are perhaps no longer relevant (as there are many examples.)

We, adults, are used to understanding the world through categorizations and simplifications that allow us to reach conclusions with little information. Meanwhile children are used to asking question after question such as the classic example of constantly asking “why?”. In those cases, the joke is that the only way to end the interrogation is by saying “because that’s how it is!”

So this next April 30th., if the question is “why celebrate?” let’s answer ourselves “because that’s how it is!”
