Path to a bachelor’s degree can begin at a community college
Students who want a four-year college degree, but who want or need to start at a local community college, can find flexible and affordable pathways to an associate’s degree at these colleges. At the same time, they can prepare to transfer into a bachelor’s program.
Many two-year colleges also offer partnerships with four-year universities on programs that enable students to transition smoothly to a university for completion of their bachelor’s degrees. These partnerships ensure that non-transferrable courses are avoided and vital pre-requisite classes are completed. This not only saves the students time and money, but also prepares them for university-level coursework.
Fort Hays State University has partnered with several Kansas community and technical colleges to offer pathway programs for students transferring in with 45 or more credit hours. These agreements also work with online degree programs, so you can complete your degree without having to uproot your entire life.
Begin by investigating local community colleges. Look for schools that carry your desired program, visit their campuses and speak with admissions counselors to clear up questions or concerns and to get help in applying for admission and for financial aid, and check for any transfer agreements they have with four-year institutions.
For transfer students, one of the most important issues is transfer credits. Fort Hays State accepts transfer credit from all regionally accredited U.S. institutions, but always check an institution’s transfer guide, to see how the credits from your coursework will transfer. This will help you plan your coursework to save time and money by avoiding having to re-take classes or fill in missing coursework.
