There is an old Native-American story of a grandfather who tells his grandson, “Boy, a fight is going on inside of me. It’s a terrible battle between two wolves. One wolf is evil. This wolf is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. That wolf is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside of you and inside of every other person, too.” The grandson thinks for a minute and asks his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?” The old man replied, “The one you feed.”
You have a shadow self and a higher self.
Your shadow self is your dark side. This dark side is also known as the lower self, the dark twin, the evil twin, your Doppelganger, the human part of you. Your shadow self lies to avoid embarrassment and getting caught. Your shadow self contemplates revenge in order to get even. Your shadow self creates drama and never lets go of a grudge. Your shadow self-gossips, is judgmental, self-serving, and materialistic. Your shadow self is the part of you that eats too much, drinks too much, and spends too much. This is the evil wolf in you. Your shadow self is the nature of Chaos represented as Ego.

Your higher self is your light side. This light side is also called the good twin, your intuition, your guardian angel, your conscience, the divine part of you, the God-seed within. Your higher self knows that the lie is harder than the truth. Your higher self is open-minded and wants to learn new things. Your higher self is not easily offended and always takes responsibility for its actions. Your higher self has self-control, does not judge, and is drawn to things of the spirit. Your higher self is the part of you that gives more than it receives. This is the good wolf in you. Your higher self is the nature of God represented as Love.
The principle of yin and yang supports the concepts of the shadow self and the higher self. Yin and yang explains that all things exist through their contrasts and interactions. For example, mountains always come with valleys, what goes up must come down, and the light cannot exist without the dark. The classic circle divided by an S-shaped line with the yin as the black side with the white dot and the yang as the white side with the black dot beautifully illustrates how a spot of dark is in the light and a spot of light is in the dark. Following this principle of yin and yang, the Self has a dark side and a light side. Darth Vader had a touch of light in him and Luke Skywalker had a touch of dark. God has a touch of dark and Chaos has a touch of light. This is because the light knows that there are times when evil has to fight evil. And the dark knows that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Certain religions and new-age philosophies teach that man can become god. While it is true that man has the capacity to become like god, who said that all gods are benevolent? God is the God of Love. Chaos is the God of this world. The God of everything that is against love. The God of Evil.
Which wolf are you feeding? The wolf you feed is the wolf you become. The god you serve is the god you become.
