“To bad weather, good attitude”

-Popular Saying

On Tuesday night we had another snowfall, one more to the “record-breaking” precipitation of this year. And although for some this is an opportunity to earn money, the majority of us become locked indoors or with the risk of going out and having an accident.

This atmospheric phenomenon, which in itself is a beautiful sight, brings with it many nuisances once the white snow melts and splatters; and if the cold continues, it turns into slippery ice.

This year, not just the winter but also the government has made a lot of us Hispanics nervous and worried about what’s coming. But we also made the decision to come to this country and although many radicals might not understand it, it’s hard to leave family, friends and everything we had in order to look for a better alternative here than what we had in our home countries.

For the majority of migrants, upon arrival we experience our first snowfall and our first freeze; but we also had our first reasonable paycheck, our first van, and even our first house.

Things have sometimes been hard, not only because of the weather but also because some Americans don’t like our look, they don’t understand our reasons to migrate, or simply because they don’t understand our language.

But all of that doesn’t matter, we have to get the shovel out, the gloves, and the jacket, and show with our work that we are not terrible, that we respect everyone, that we are happy and that we know how to have a good attitude towards adversities.
