Fourth Hispanic College Institute set for this summer at FHSU

Applications are now open for the fourth annual Hispanic College Institute, scheduled for June 19 to June 22 on the Fort Hays State University campus.

The Institute is a free, four-day, residential program aimed at preparing high school Hispanic and Latina/o students to enter and succeed in higher education. The program brings in Hispanic and Latino educators and community leaders from all over the Midwest.

Students who attend have many opportunities to meet and interact with community leaders, college students, and university leaders who can relate to the students’ experiences and challenges.

A Fort Hays State HCI LEAD team, made up of current Fort Hays State University students, will lead each familia throughout the institute. LEAD stands for Leadership, Empowerment, and Academic Development. The members of each LEAD team are responsible for serving as guides, mentors, and leaders to a ‘familia’ of 10-12 high school students.

Our LEADs are individuals who volunteer for this position because they understand how helpful it is to have mentors and coaches.

Students who will be juniors or seniors in high school in the 2019-20 year are eligible. In its first three years, the program has served 215 students from across Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. This year as in the first three years, students will be picked up in their hometowns by the university. Food, travel and lodging are provided by the university.

During their four days and three nights, students will stay on FHSU’s beautiful campus, learn about the importance of going to college and how to navigate the college admission process. They will get help writing a college application essay, improve public speaking, presentation and interviewing skills, compete for a variety of scholarships.
