Day of Giving Thanks

It is said that the first Thanksgiving celebration was done by Dutch pilgrims that arrived to America, fleeing from religious persecution. That is, from its beginning it was conceived with a religious character, given that the objective was to give thanks to God for the blessings received.

It’s currently become a celebration whose main purpose is the family reunuion. Loads of people travel by air and by land, from various places in order to reunite with family; and those who can’t usually take advantage of this opportunity to call their loved ones.

But the intention of “giving thanks” should be the main purpose of this day. All of us have something to be thankful for, whether our “harvest” be material, in health, or in personal achievements. Sometimes we give so much importance to bad things that happen to us, that we forget all the good things that have happened to us and that surround us.

For those who are believers. God is who fills us with blessings and although he also sometimes tests us, it is him that we should thank for everything that we have received. The people who don’t believe are also present at the celebrations; they may not thank a supreme being, but it is somewhat hard to believe that everything that happens to them is a consequence only of their own actions.

The presence of God is like many other things in life, when we are far from them, they look small, but the closer we get, the greater they become.

This Thursday let’s remember that the union with family and enjoying abundant food is ok: but the main thing is giving thanks for everything that we are and for what we have.
