November is good time to apply for scholarships, housing
November is a great time to apply for scholarships and on-campus housing – there is still a wide availability of both. Tips and lists of scholarships at any college should be accompanied by application forms. These opportunities include community and national scholarships as well as scholarships specific to the institution.
At FHSU, we value a student’s ACT score and cumulative grade-point average. We have some scholarships that are automatic awarded based entirely on ACT score and are renewable for up to three additional years it the student maintains a GPA of 3.3 or better.
These scholarships are the $3,500 Presidential Award of Distinction; the $2,000 University Scholar Award; the $1,500 Hays City Scholar; and the $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award.
Applications for Academic Opportunity Awards from individual departments and transfer student scholarships are also available on the FHSU Web scholarship portal, www.fhsu.edu/finaid/scholarships/. Through the portal, students can also access complete information on qualifications and instructions.
The AOA scholarships, non-renewable, are $500 or $900 and help defray the costs of books and on-campus housing for first-year students.
Fort Hays State also has a unique Access to Academic Opportunity Grant, $2,000 or $4,000 annually, for first-generation and students of diversity.
Hispanic students also have scholarship opportunities specific to them, which include the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Kansas City Hispanic Education scholarships.
Fort Hays State is also in the second year of a partnership with the Rudd Foundation, Wichita. The Rudd Foundation has partnered with Fort Hays State, Emporia State and Wichita State. Students who qualify for Pell Grants are eligible, with preference given to first-generation students and students from under-represented populations.
The scholarship covers all remaining costs of tuitions, fees, books, supplies and on-campus housing after other grants and scholarships have been awarded.
