Visiting campus is an important part of choosing a college
More things than fall begin in September. It is also a month when high school seniors can get a jump on college and, in Kansas, maybe even save some money.
Visiting campus when classes are in full swing is important. The student can get a feel for the layout of the campus and gain a sense of the environment and thereby form an idea of how he or she will fit into it. It is also important for students to visit multiple campuses so they can have a basis for comparison in order to make a better choice of what fits.
On the visit, students should try to find out what resources are available – health care, counseling, academic help, advisors, financial aid and scholarships – and how easy or hard it is to access them, and what deadlines apply.

Another reason it is important to make visits in September is because then you can apply to the institution of your choice in October, which is College Application Month in Kansas. Admissions fees are waived for students applying for admission during Apply Kansas events. High school guidance counselors will have details.
To see Fort Hays State, students in eastern Kansas can take advantage of FHSU’s Eastern Kansas Bus Trip from Sunday, Oct. 21, to Monday, Oct. 22. Fort Hays State provides the bus, food, rooms for the night and a free T-shirt.
Students will be able to connect with current FHSU students and get some familiarity with the FHSU campus.
The bus will make pickups in Bonner Springs, Lawrence and Topeka. Registration is online at www.fhsu.edu/admissions/Kansas-City-Area-Bus-Trip. Addresses for pickup and return locations are also on that page.
More help is available from Katie Hindman, eastern Kansas admissions counselor, kjhindman@fhsu.edu, or Erica Meneses, multicultural admissions counselor, e_meneses@fhsu.edu.
