Hispanic Heritage Month celebration begins soon
When it comes to Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins on Sept. 15th this year, there are many events around the nation that deal with Hispanic culture.
Many people, businesses and organizations take part in the Hispanic Heritage Month. HALO – the Hispanic American Leadership Organization – is included in that participation. Our club here at Fort Hays State University believes in educating others about Hispanic culture. We put on many events on our campus.

One of our bigger events is Salsa Magic, where FHSU’s students come and learn how to dance Hispanic rhythms such as bachata, salsa, and merengue. We also have an informational booth at the Memorial Union to educate students about the month and what It means to us. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we are able to use the widely known celebration to tell the stories about the great contributions of Hispanics.
For the past few years, Hispanics have been portrayed negatively in many ways, but during this month we stay away from the challenges, and we focus on the many positive contributions that have helped shape what is known as America today. I believe that all Hispanic American Leadership Organizations should embrace this month to not only do fun events, but also to educate and guide everyday Americans away from the negative ideas they may have regarding Hispanic culture.
The wonderful thing about Hispanic Heritage Month is that it is not just a single country that is taking part, but many different countries are involved in this celebration. This helps unite people instead of segregating different ethnicities and countries.
This way everyone is united as one. “Unidos sí se puede,” is what I always say.
