New library branch opens in Johnson County


The Johnson County Library Monticello Branch is the newest branch and the first new library in the Shawnee area since 1989, as well as the first in the county system since 2000.

On opening day, the collection size was 109,297 which includes kids and teens from all formats, adult fiction, print, adult non-fiction, print, adult CD audio, music CDs and DVDs.

The structure was completed this year with a cost of $18.1 Million at 30,000+ square feet.

Special Features in the library include a terrace with seating and electric plugs, kids area with dedicated story time room, and an outdoor walking area.

There are nine meeting and study rooms which include a 100 person meeting room with A/V and a 12 person ‘round’ conference room with conversational seating.

Technology features include Wi-Fi access, Mac and PC workstations, electric plugs at seats and workstations.

The branch manager is Christian Madrigal; he is also in charge of the De Soto branch.

A drive-through service window is also featured for those wanting to pick up their holds as well as a drive up book drop.

Monticello Library is located at 22435 W. 66th. Street en Shawnee, Kan.
