Plenty science, “wow” in Union Station’s dino show
Among the dinosaur remains collection inside of Union Station’s newest exhibit “Dinosaurs Revealed” is a 600-pound femur and it took nearly a decade to reconstruct.
The femur is about the size of a small table and sits encased in hardened stone case. Visitors are invited to touch the bones of the massive reptile, that’s known as the Camarasaurus Supremus.
With this exhibit, Union Station has “tried to to bring more science than ‘wow,’” Gilbert Parker, exhibit consultant and owner of several of the exhibit’s fossils, said.
“But there’s still plenty of ‘wow’ here,” he added.
Parker referred to the information-dense nature of the “Dinosaurs Revealed” exhibit, which is a deep dive in to the dinosaur species that once roamed the U.S. It goes in to exhaustive details on the creature’s presence in the country going to far as to discuss their diets.
The “wow” Parker referred to may have perhaps been the numerous animatronic dinosaurs that greet visitors throughout the exhibit. Not to mention the actual dinosaur remains on loan from Parker and the University of Kansas.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City has also been a supporter of this exhibit. The schools have helped the exhibit develop materials to help attendees understand how the remains were excavated and how they’re being preserved.
Visitors seem to be responding warmly to the science-heavy “Dinosaurs Revealed.” Since Union Station opened the dinosaur exhibit on June 30— far ahead the expected open date July 3—the attraction has welcomed almost 15,000 visitors making the exhibit a top performer in Union Station’s offerings.
