FHSU hosts its third annual HCI

Fort Hays State University celebrated its third annual Hispanic College Institute by welcoming 80 high school junior and senior students of Hispanic or Latino descent.

The students had the opportunity to experience life as a college student for four days by attending a few classes and staying in the McMindes Hall dormitories.

With the help of the leads, the students got to go on both tours of campus and of Hays in order to get the full experience of what it is like to be a student at FHSU.

“It's about creating a bond with high school junior and senior students by creating a ‘familia’ where they can reach out to us for guidance,” said Norma Olivares, an FHSU senior and HCI lead.

The program also included Hispanic stars who were connected to FHSU and who spoke to the students. Of those Hispanic stars, some ended up being speakers throughout the four days.

“We had an accountant, lieutenant, cardiologist, doctor, and many more who all had the same objective: to succeed and show us the importance of furthering our education,” said Olivares.

The students also got the opportunity to get help with filling out their FASFA and being entered to win various university scholarships.

Fort Hays State University is the only school in Kansas with a program like this.
