The World Cup
Today marks the beginning of the World Cup Russia 2018, by far the most important and most-watched sporting event in the world.
This sport is played practically all over the world and the majority of countries have an official representation. To give yourself an idea of its reach, it’s enough to say that FIFA (the International Football Federation) has 211 affiliate countries, 18 more than the UN (United Nations).
In regards to the world tournament, which is celebrated every 4 years, there is a large quantity of teams that are interested in being the organizers, given that the winnings for television broadcasts and the jersey sales of teams, souvenirs and consumption in stadiums as well as in the cities can be millionaires. That’s why it’s said that there are huge bribes to obtain hosting the World Cup.
Besides being a big honor to represent their countries, players want to win because they prizes that teams get are in the millions. For this World Cup the team that wins the tournament will earn 38 million dollars, second place will receive 28, third 24, and fourth 22.
At every latitude of the globe there are children playing football in the field, in parks, or on public roads.
In the United States, football soccer is followed by many people since the sport has developed a lot in all categories, including the 23 professional teams with the MLS, which is plastered with international stars. Even the national team has had big achievements, but unfortunately it didn’t manage to qualify for the World Cup, which led to a slight decrease of interest here (and a lot of lost revenue for broadcasters).
Many people that live here think that the final game of American football has a bigger audience, but to give ourselves an idea: the Super Bowl between Philadelphia and New England was watched by a bit more than 100 million people, while the final in the last World Cup between Argentina and Germany was watched by over a billion people.
Without a doubt football soccer is a sport that creates passions and during the next month it will create huge emotions in millions of people all over the world.
