Making Movies brings back the Carnaval Saturday
”Quiero ver a mi padre en carnaval,” Enrique Chi, lead singer of homegrown music ensemble Making Movies, sings on their newest single “Tormenta.”
It’s a song they wrote on the road while on their spring tour this year. When Chi wrote his thoughts about it following the single’s debut, he lamented that his craft was taking his so far from home and for so long.
So it’s natural that the band will want a party—nay, a carnaval—on their return.
On Saturday, June 9, beginning at 5:00 p.m., the band will headline their annual festival, the Making Movies Carnaval, at Knuckleheads Saloon.
According to Cindy Long, Media Relations at Knuckleheads Saloon, “Making Movies Carnaval is an immersive music experience that brings together national, local, and youth performers to celebrate Kansas City’s diverse arts community. The family friendly event features street performers, food trucks, artist’s alley, local vendors, face painting, drum safari and more.”
Hearing the band in their newest single, the Latino musical outfit is continuing their almost deliberate genre evading drawing on traditions from rock as well as cumbia and African-influenced sonic expressions.
Similarly, the Making Movies Carnaval is drawing in a variety of acts including Parranderos Latin Combo and Mariachi Flor de Toloache.
This is the fourth annual carnaval the band has organized; and the event is a fundraiser for Arts as Mentorship, the band’s music-education nonprofit organization.
Set to launch this fall, the program seeks to extend and build upon a youth music program that started with the Westside’s Mattie Rhodes Center. The program seeks to build upon the young musicians’ interests and deepen their skills with formal music training as well as entrepreneurial training, according to the organization’s website.
