Spay & Neuter KC provides support to pets and their people

After working several years in an animal shelter - and seeing how many pets were euthanized each year because there weren’t enough homes - Michelle Rivera had an idea.

“We were putting more than 20,000 pets down each year in Kansas City,” she admits. “It was heartbreaking.”

That’s why Michelle started Spay & Neuter Kansas City (SNKC). She believed it was the best way to prevent the problem. That was in 2002. And in the 16 years since, they have spayed or neutered over 100,000 animals, causing a 35 percent reduction in animals going into area shelters.

She also realized that, in addition to low-cost surgeries, there was a need to vaccinate pets to help keep them healthy. “We believe the best way to end homelessness is to find more homes,” she says. “That means providing low-cost services that keep pets healthy so they can stay with their families.”

SNKC also provides pet supplies and hosts monthly pet food pantries for struggling pet owners.

“We want to be seen as a resource for pet owners,” Michelle concludes. “We don’t judge people, we don’t turn people away due to finances, we don’t do anything that jeopardizes the human-animal bond.”

SNKC has two locations: one in Kansas City, Missouri, at 1116 E. 59th St., and a second in Kansas City, Kansas, at 3722 State Ave. In KCMO, walk-in vaccinations are Tuesday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM and 9 AM - noon on Saturdays. The spay and neuter clinic is open Tuesday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (by apointment only). In KCK, walk-in vaccinations are Saturdays from 9 AM to noon. Spay and Neuter appointments can be made for Tuesdays through Fridays from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (by apointment only).

There are always Spanish speakers on hand to help out.
