HARD WORK PAYS OFF!

How about some GOOD news about immigration??

I usually write about my frustrations with our immigration system, but this past week, I got to experience something beautiful. I was hired to help an elderly couple apply for citizenship. They are from the Middle East, and the wife has limited English abilities, but the husband definitely was on top of this process. When we started to prepare for the interview (which included paying me to drive to Wichita for the day), it was questionable whether she would be able to pass the test. But hard work and perseverance paid off.

The Husband worked every day with his wife on her English skills. He questioned her at every meal, providing her with Citizenship test questions and helping her to learn the 21 pages of the citizenship application.

Although, frankly, the Wife was rather tired of the work and ordeal of learning, she was able to keep at it and passed the examination last week, and will be scheduled for her Ceremony. She wanted to become a Citizen bad enough to really work at it.

Often I hear from my clients that they are too old to learn. I beg to differ! It is never too late — and all you need is the right motivation, the right helper and some hard work.

If you find you need help with the Citizenship process, I recommend that you find the help through classes at agencies like Catholic Charities, the Public Library, or Jewish Vocational Services.

Learning something new and challenging yourself is one way to LIVE!
