As you may have heard, the Dream Act has been in the news ALOT lately.
The Senate was spending a week trying to negotiate a deal on immigration and get something passed before the President’s “deadline”. Well, they were unsuccessful, thankfully. The President wanted his four “pillars” of immigration reform: 1. Dream Act; 2. Cancel the Diversity Lottery; 3. Cancel the ability of U.S. citizens to file for their parents as Immediate Relatives; and 4. Fund to build the Wall.
We support the Dream Act passage and urge Congress to get it done, so that these DACA kids do not have to continually be in fear of their status expiring.
There are great reasons to pass the Dream Act: these are good, educated, hard-working, contributing, tax-paying youth who were brought to the U.S. through no fault of their own and have grown up here. It is the moral thing to do. It is the smart thing to do for our businesses and our communities.
The other three pillars or demands by President Trump have a lot of negative consequences and we are lucky that they couldn’t get a compromise worked out. In the meantime, the Federal Courts have ruled that President Trump did NOT have the power to cancel DACA, so those youth can continue filing for extensions and maintaining their immigration “status”.
