Applications open for Hispanic College Institute 2018
Applications are open for this summer’s 2018 edition of the Hispanic College Institute at Fort Hays State University. The deadline is April 1 for the institute, which will run from June 20 to June 23.
The institute is a free, four-day, residential program that prepares high school Hispanic students to enter and succeed in higher education. Students accepted must pay a $10 reservation fee, but the fee is returned to the student when he or she arrives on campus for the institute. Transportation to the institute and home again is free, and lodging at the institute is also free.
The program is open for Hispanic high school sophomores (who will graduate in 2020) or juniors (class of 2019). Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA.
HCI students live on the FHSU campus while learning about the importance of going to college, and the college admissions process. Students will also be able to get help writing a college application essay.
Other practical lessons will include learning how to navigate financial aid and FAFSA applications. Students will also have opportunities to improve public speaking, presentation and interviewing techniques.
“These are all the skills that will help students succeed at any university they attend,” said Taylor Kriley, director of inclusion and diversity excellence at FHSU.
She said that students do not incur any obligation to attend FHSU, but they will get to meet with FHSU admissions and financial aid representatives and compete for FHSU scholarships.
“The institute’s overall purpose is to introduce Hispanic students to college life in a setting where they can engage with Hispanic leaders, mentors and role models,” said Kriley.
“At the same time, they can have some fun and make new friends not only from Kansas but from surrounding states, too,” said Kriley.
