Six tips for a healthy holiday
Keeping up with healthy habits is hard at the holidays. There is so much to do! But there are some simple tricks you can use to stay well this season. The LiveWell Johnson County dietitian has six tips to keep you healthy into the New Year:
1. Parties: When you go to a holiday party, find the smallest plate you can and fill it with the lowest calorie options, such as veggies and hummus, shrimp cocktail, or salsa on veggies. If you bring a dish to share, bring something like this, so others have low calorie options, too. After you snack, walk away from the food table to avoid overeating and instead talk to your friends and family.
2. Eat before you go: Eat a healthy snack before you go to an event. If you’re not hungry, you can limit yourself to one or two party treats.
3. Running errands: Prepare ahead for those crazy days, so you don’t hit the drive-thru. Fill small containers with high-protein snacks like fresh veggies and hummus or low-fat salad dressing; sliced fruits and cheese cubes, or lightly salted nuts.
4. Drink water: Carry a water bottle everywhere so you’re not tempted by soda or sugary coffee drinks.
5. Sleep: Try to stick to your typical sleep schedule, even on weekends!
6. Think differently: Think about the holidays as single events, not as 30 days of indulging!
