Protect yourself when traveling

Recently, we have seen more and more people detained by Immigration on simple traffic matters. There are certain cities in this Metropolitan area that are working closely with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to apprehend people who are undocumented by increasing the traffic stops/immigration detentions.

It is making it more important to avoid driving illegally, without a valid driver’s license. I try to advise my clients to find ways to protect themselves (ask for rides, call a taxi, move close to work, walk, use public transportation, bike!)

It’s not possible to obtain a legal driver’s license in Missouri or Kansas if you are undocumented or out of status. Every time an undocumented person gets behind the wheel of a car, there is a risk of being caught by Immigration.

Those of us who are citizens or permanent residents, and who have valid driver’s licenses, can find ways to assist by simply providing transportation to people who need it or running errands for those who have no legal transportation options. It’s one easy way to reach out and connect, and possibly, save an individual or family from having to go through a deportation process.

If you have to go to traffic court, we strongly advise you to get a traffic attorney! If you need help with an immigration detention issue after a traffic stop, please call our office at 816-356-7100 for assistance.
