Now is the time to apply for housing

At Fort Hays State University, applications for housing for the 2018-2019 academic year will be available soon. Most colleges and universities have already made their applications available or will be making them available soon. Why so soon?

“It is important to start making your on-campus arrangements now because housing – depending on the institution – can fill up very quickly, and you may be placed on a waiting list,” said Christina Hurtado, director of residential life at Fort Hays State.

“Filling out your agreement earlier doesn’t guarantee that you will get into the building or community of your choice,” she said, “but it does give you a better chance because we let students select their spaces based on when they filled out their contract.”

At Fort Hays State, she said, any current student or any student who has been admitted to the institution could fill out the contract as of 10 a.m. on Nov. 7. Students can access the Housing Contract via their TigerTracks accounts. They need to be prepared to fill out their contracts and pay the $40 application fee.

At FHSU, said Hurtado, first time freshmen must live on campus unless they live within a 60-mile radius of Hays. “First-year freshman who live on campus feel more connected to the campus community and are typically more successful academically,” she said.

“There are resources available when they walk out the front doors of their buildings, and they don’t need to worry about traffic or finding a parking space on campus,” she said. “They can just roll out of bed and go to class.”

Fort Hays State has opened three brand-new residence halls in the last two years. The Dane G. Hansen Scholarship Hall opened last year; and this fall, the 96-bed Tiger Village and the 406-bed Victor E. Village opened.
