Applications are now open for Fort Hays State University’s second annual Hispanic College Institute, a free, four-day residential program on the university campus. From June 21-24, students who attend will learn about the college admission process and get tips on applying for scholarships. They will also have the opportunity to explore career options that fit their interests.
“We want students to not only learn about college, but also to gain critical thinking skills and engage with Hispanic leaders and role models from across the Midwest,” said Hector Villanueva, Fort Hays State admissions counselor. About 25 Hispanic leaders will attend the institute to share their stories with the students, help them understand that college is an option for everyone, and motivate them to make college a reality in their own lives.
The Hispanic College Institute began in June 2016 with 79 students attending. Villanueva said that many of those who attended the first HCI found it to be a life-changing event. They learned about the similarities in their cultures and backgrounds, yet understood that each of them brought a unique perspective to the college search process.
Although the days are filled with workshops and speakers, the students will also interact with each other in a more relaxed social setting. For instance, said Villanueva, “Last year we played games, ate a lot of snacks, had a dance and even had some students compete in a talent show to win scholarships. There is something for everyone at the Hispanic College Institute.”
Fort Hays State hosts the only program of this kind in Kansas. “We encourage all high school sophomores and juniors to apply,” said Villanueva.
Students can apply by going to www.fhsu.edu/hci or calling the Office of Admissions for more information at 785-628-5666.
Application deadline is April 1, 2017.
