Getting ready for college is a big step to prepare for in your senior year of high school, and a lot of decisions and worries come with it. Moving to Hays, Kan., was a change for me, and at first I was scared, but once I got on campus and started meeting other students I quickly learned there was no reason to be scared or nervous.
Fort Hays State University is a small campus with a friendly environment, and it feels like we are a big family. Class sizes are small and the professors are super helpful and friendly. There is a personal connection and some even share their numbers with us in case we need to call them. The small classes also make it easier to meet friends.
I was worried about living on campus with a new roommate, but it’s a great experience. You meet your closest friends living in the residential halls. Some advice for living with roommates: Be flexible, open to communication and willing to compromise. Going to events together will help you get to know one another.
I think the best advice I can give an incoming student is to get involved right away. Being involved on campus is important and not just for résumé-building. The activities are important, you meet so many amazing people, and you learn even more about campus. It can build leadership and communication skills as well as teach you how to work in groups and what it means to volunteer.

Involvement helps you perform better in school, connects you with the university and your major, and will help the transition go faster and smoother, giving you an experience that will make your time at FHSU memorable for a lifetime.
