The Immigration Court

The Immigration Court in Kansas City is the site where people in the process of deportation must present themselves to litigate their case. The Court is located in the area of Crown Center, in the building at 2345 Grand Blvd. There is parking available with parking meters or in the underground parking beneath the building (parking in cash only).

Upon entering the building, you should take the elevator to the 5th floor. Once out of the elevator, you’ll see a door (open only during the Court hours, 8a.m.-4p.m.). When entering, there will be a metal detector and two security guards. The person that is speaking must present identification. The persons accompanying can remain in the room or in the reception of the building, in the lowest floor. Keep your cell phone off or on complete silence while you’re in Court.

Traditionally, the immigration judges attend firstly to the cases of people represented by a lawyer. If you don’t have a lawyer, you must wait in the waiting room until the cases without lawyers begin.

The Court has interpreter service available. Besides interpreters into Spanish (the most common one), there are also certain indigenous languages, such as Quiché. Ask for an interpreter in the language that you speak best. When it is your turn in front of the judge, the judge will put you under oath, and you must swear to tell the truth. Sometimes, the judge will ask you for your name, your address, your date of birth.

If you don’t have a lawyer and you want the opportunity to consult with and hire someone to represent you, you can ask the judge for more time. If it is your first hearing in Court, it is probable that the judge concedes an extension in your case.
