For scholarships, the time is now
This is prime scholarship season – meaning the time to apply for the money available through scholarships – for high school seniors who plan to go to college in the 2017-2018 academic year. The time to lock in scholarship funding is now.
For students considering or planning to attend Fort Hays State University, applying now has another benefit: Student Recognition Programs. Beginning in late January, Fort Hays State faculty, staff and administrators will visit 12 cities, 10 in Kansas plus Holdrege, Neb., and Denver, to meet scholarship recipients and their families and to recognize scholarship winners for the scholarships they have been awarded.
Each SRP will also feature three drawings, one for a $500 book scholarship, one for a $400 FHSU Student Recognition Program Scholarship and another for an iPad. Some will also have a drawing for FHSU Alumni Association chapter scholarships. All the programs also have a reception serving either a dessert or pizza.
Scholarships to be awarded at the SRPs include the $3,500 Presidential Award of Distinction, the $2,000 University Scholar Award, the $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award, and the $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. All are awarded only to incoming freshmen enrolling in college for the first time, but each is renewable provided students maintain the minimum required academic standing.
A renewable $1,500 scholarship is also available for transfer students, as is a $1,000 non-renewable transfer scholarship. Other one-time awards recognized at the SRPs are the $900 or $500 Academic Opportunity Awards, given to scholars by individual academic departments.
The Kansas City area SRP is first in the lineup this year, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in the Doubletree Hotel, 10100 College Blvd., Overland Park.
Attendance is free, family and friends are welcome.
