Does history repeat itself?

It’s not entirely clear where the first inhabitants of Easter Island came from, which is located in the Pacific Ocean 2,370 miles from South America.

What is known is that few arrived, populated and they extended throughout the entire island, rich in forests, palm trees and many other natural resources. With time, due to overpopulation, rivalries started between the different tribes which resulted in civil war, where those called “short ears” rebelled against the “long ears” that had control. The island ended up devastated with few remaining inhabitants.

Any similarities? This has happened in many cultures throughout history. It seems as though human beings always follow the same patterns of behavior; in modern times the “long wallets” are the ones who control the “short wallets” and the destruction of the environment and resources continues to be the same.

The hate based on racial differences and religious beliefs doesn’t merely still take place but there are groups which openly oppose other groups of people and are supported by others with money and power.

It’s hard to predict that the world will end in disaster, but it would seem as though hate and self-destruction were part of human nature.

Lately there is much about trips to Mars and the possibility of colonizing it. It seems illogical to think about searching for another planet to colonize while having one with resources and possibilities.

On the other hand, if this took place, how much time would it take for disputes for power to take place in the new planet? If we look to what history shows us, sadly, it wouldn’t take long. Hopefully we will truly learn from history and work together as a human race; and just like it’s done with diseases, we recognize that we have a social disease and that this may be the first step to reaching a cure.
