We believe in God

According to the American Religious Identification Survey, in the United States roughly 80% of people are believers (75% Christian and 5% other religions). That is to say that the large majority of Americans believe in God.

However, according to other figures of the site “Expediente Rojo”:

• One of every 4 girls has been abused secually before the age of 18. Every year around 6 million children are victims of abuse.

• 310 million weapons are circulated in the United States; that is to say, a rate of 88.8 weapons for every 100 inhabitants. Some 26 people each day are killed with a firearm.

• 77% of elementary and secondary school children in the United States have been victims of bullying at least once. Every day, some 160,000 students skip school out of fear of being assaulted.

• One out of every 4 people has paid a bribe to a public organization or agent over the last year, according to a study by Transparency International.

• Some 300,000 children are victims of sex trafficking in the U.S.

• Recent figures reveal that throughout the United States there may be around 20,000 gangs with roughly a million members.

• One out of every four women has experienced some sort of domestic violence. Every year there are roughly 5 million incidents reported. Every nine seconds a woman is assaulted or hit by her significant other.

Other numbers tell us that:

• 40 million Americans regularly visit pornography pages

• Between 40% and 50% of marriages end up in divorce.

Upon seeing these numbers, it would seem as though we live in total chaos and the truth is that it is not so, given that this only affects some parts of the overall society. Nevertheless, if all the major religions promote good behavior, love and understanding between people, all of this should not happen.

Maybe it is time to reconsider a bit and pay attention to the grandmothers that always tell us that we have to behave “the way God wills.”
